New for 2019, HKwalls is expanding it’s annual festival pop-up headquarters to bring you The Clubhouse, an alternative creative venue, for artists and visitors alike to celebrate art and unwind.  Open every day from noon to 8:00pm, The Clubhouse will be home to exhibitions, numerous workshops, short films, special performances, and more.

Located at 6 Stewart Road, The Clubhouse is situated within a traditional Hong Kong tong lau built in the 1920s. A Grade III historic building, the tong lau has seen much use, having housed numerous establishments over the course of 90 long years. Having fallen into relative disrepair in recent years, HKwalls has conducted a selective renovation of the space, while preserving the tong lau’s unique atmosphere and history. In doing so, the building’s rare architecture is refreshed and celebrated as a unique event venue open to the public, if only for a short time.

The Clubhouse will be spread over 3000 square feet of space between the second and third floors, along with an open-air roof. The second floor is jointly operated by HKwalls, Ueberformat, and other gallerias, and will be used as an exhibition space for artists from many different backgrounds around the world. The Clubhouse Gallery seeks to showcase an eclectic mix of artwork by esteemed contemporary artists. From Max Papeschi’s satirical digital art to Johanna Keimeyer’s photo portraits of introspection, the exhibition is designed to appeal to all tastes and senses. The exhibition will also feature various art happenings throughout the festival. Sometimes spontaneous and always entertaining, participating artists will host interactive and participatory art events. A key highlight of the exhibition will be a series of live paintings conducted by American artist Rosalio Vargas who is renowned for his wildly vibrant and energetic works. Visitors can sign up for ‘The Rosalio Experience’, a unique opportunity where Vargas will personally paint pieces of clothing and entire vehicles brought by the public. The Clubhouse Gallery is a major part of UNITE, Ueberformat’s wider community engagement programme. Directed by Ueberformat and Collective Action Studio and in collaboration with HKwalls and Fnnch, UNITE is an active artmaking event dedicated to collecting and displaying personal reflections on the idea of ‘unity’. The event encourages the public participation via three artmaking stations facilitated by professional artists. Said art will be collected and displayed in the main stairway of the HKwalls Clubhouse.

The third floor of The Clubhouse will focus on HKwalls and will host the festival’s annual exhibition which showcases the works of past and present HKwalls artists. Featuring multi-disciplinary works as well as traditional prints and canvases, most of the work on display will also be available for purchase should visitors wish to take a bit of the festival home with them. Designed to be an easily transformable mixed-use space, The Clubhouse’s third floor will also be used to host several art workshops taught by experienced professionals. As always, all festival events including the workshops and guided tours are completely free to attend and visitors can easily sign up for them on the HKwalls website.

The content of the workshops have been carefully chosen to reflect HKwalls’ celebration of street art and street culture. As such, the workshops on offer are geared more towards unconventional art mediums including miniature model graffiti. Participants will learn the fundamental concepts and techniques of graffiti art before creating their own design and applying it onto miniature model trains. The cross-stitching workshop conducted by Make & Do Studio will lead participants on an exploration of cross stitching. Designed to immerse participants in the vocabulary and techniques of creative stitching, Make & Do Studio will guide participants through the entire process from concept to execution. Another unique opportunity presented by the festival is the 3D paper mask workshop. Conducted by Little Chilli Studio, a local multidisciplinary design studio founded in 2018, this fun workshop will teach participants how to make a wearable cat-themed mask sculpture using coloured paper.  Last but not least and with the support of Arts Council England, the Great Britain Campaign and The Culture Diary, UK artist Aida Wilde will be hosting a 2 hour poster-making workshop. Besides teaching participants the basics of stenciling, collage, and poster design, the workshop will also explore issues of empowerment, identity, and self-expression. Arts Council England is also helping bring other talented UK artists to Hong Kong. This includes INSA, a street artist well-known for his ‘GIF-ITI’ art which transcends traditional offline street art, and Reeps One, an award-winning beatboxer who will be performing at some of HKwalls’ special events. Reeps One will also host a live drawing session with esteemed UK photographer Ben Hopper.
